Amaranth - "Golden Grain" for the Body
In natural cosmetology, there are many successful products created based on superfoods - rare and exotic food products that are exceptionally rich in valuable substances. One of the most successful examples is the use of amaranth oil in cosmetics.
What is its value?
When Spanish conquistadors first set foot on the land of Mexico, they noticed the plant huauhtli, which served the local inhabitants - the Aztecs - as a staple grain crop. Huauhtli could reach 2 meters in height, its impressive large leaves could be yellow, red, or green, and at the top, a lush umbrella-like inflorescence adorned with numerous seeds weighing up to 1 kg at harvest time.
The plant was extraordinarily undemanding, fruitful, and easy to cultivate. This wonderful plant, which the colonizers named amaranth (from Greek - "unfading"), played an important role in the social and religious life of the Aztecs: its grain was used to pay taxes, and at the annual festival, it was mixed with honey to create ritual figurines.
Despite the obvious benefits of amaranth, European conquerors prohibited the indigenous peoples of Latin America from cultivating it. The amazing grain survived in hard-to-reach mountainous areas and was only reintroduced into cultivation in the 1970s. The revival of amaranth crops was aided by the unusual resilience of its seeds - they could retain viability for several decades.
Numerous studies in recent years have proven the high nutritional value of amaranth and clarified the composition of its oil. It turned out that due to its unique composition, amaranth oil can be used not only as a food ingredient but also as a base for rejuvenating cosmetics.
SCVALENE
FOR TISSUE RESPIRATION
Amaranth seeds are rich in oil, containing up to 10% squalene. This unsaturated hydrocarbon is one of the natural components of human sebaceous gland secretions - skin sebum.
Distributing across the skin's surface, sebum protects it from moisture loss and provides elasticity. Additionally, it has antimicrobial properties and facilitates the delivery of fat-soluble substances to the deeper layers of the skin.
Moreover, squalene participates in tissue respiration processes. Initially, this compound was isolated from the liver of deep-sea sharks, which live in conditions of extreme oxygen deficiency. In such pronounced hypoxia, a series of redox reactions occurs not through oxygen oxidation but through electron transfer during other reactions, including the conversion of the unsaturated hydrocarbon squalene into its saturated derivative squalane. This process is known as anaerobic respiration.
It is known that such reactions belong to the oldest evolutionary mechanisms of energy metabolism, which arose when the oxygen level in the Earth's atmosphere was significantly lower than it is now. Currently, anaerobic respiration plays a supportive role, aiding metabolic processes during temporary oxygen deficiency. In particular, it helps plants survive in conditions of temporary overmoistening due to spring flooding.
When it comes to cosmetic products, the ability of squalene to compensate for oxygen deficiency and provide energy metabolism in tissues is very significant in developing products for people living in large cities or areas of industrial pollution, where the atmosphere is deteriorated by emissions from enterprises or vehicle exhausts.
Squalene in cosmetics is beneficial for smokers, sedentary individuals, and older adults, whose tissues experience slowed metabolism. Significant advantages of squalene derived from amaranth oil include its affordable price, hypoallergenic nature, and low irritant potential. In clinical studies, it has been recognized as a completely safe cosmetic ingredient.
UNIVERSAL ANTIOXIDANT
Another remarkable property of amaranth oil is its high content of tocopherols and tocotrienols. Amaranth oil contains nearly 2% tocopherols (vitamin E), which is a record figure for vegetable oils. The biological function of these compounds is to prevent the oxidation of vegetable oils and promote seed preservation. It is likely that such a significant amount of antioxidant components explains the unusual ability of amaranth seeds to retain viability for a long time.
In cosmetics, tocopherols also provide antioxidant action, protecting the skin from free radical damage caused by ultraviolet radiation and other negative factors. Thus, amaranth oil in cosmetics exhibits dual protective properties, acting as both an antihypoxant and an antioxidant.
There are wonderful ways to use amaranth not only in cosmetics but also in food, for example, at breakfast. Amaranth contains a wealth of vitamins, trace elements, and minerals essential for the functioning of the human body. Moreover, it is a dietary food. Therefore, it is perfect for preparing breakfast - after consuming such food, you will feel great throughout the day. Your body will be filled with energy, and your mind will remain clear and productive even if you have to engage in monotonous or heavy mental work all day long!
Here you will find a multitude of interesting options for preparing a nutritious breakfast - amaranth seeds or flakes can be mixed with the following products: muesli, nuts, fruits, dried fruits, honey, yogurt, cheese, etc.

It is a kind of energy bomb - you will retain energy much longer. And not just physical energy, but mental energy as well.
