Fractional mesotherapy: what the method is

Fractional mesotherapy is a device-based way to deliver a meso product into the skin not with a syringe but through hundreds of thousands of micro-punctures. The Dr. Pen device makes them vertically, quickly and at the same depth, which the cosmetologist sets for the zone and the goal — on average 0.5 to 2 mm. The micro-punctures open the way for the product and in themselves trigger skin renewal: the skin responds to them by producing collagen.

How the Dr. Pen device works

The name Dermapen comes from the Latin "derma" — skin — and the English "pen". In essence it is an automated dermaroller, or "derma stamp": a tip with a bundle of thin needles moves vertically and, at a set speed, punctures the skin to the required depth.

Each microneedle creates a micro-puncture. The damage is minimal, but this very microtrauma triggers the synthesis of collagen and elastin. During one treatment about 500 thousand microchannels form in the skin on average. Through them the products penetrate deep without obstacles, and the skin becomes like a sponge that actively absorbs the beneficial substances applied to it.

Synchronised needle movement and penetration to a set depth ensure even treatment of the whole area: there is no risk of over-injuring one spot and under-treating another. The treatment uses the same sterile ampoule products as classic injection mesotherapy: mesococktails and hyaluronic acid gels. Why fractional mesotherapy is more convenient than the classic one

• Effect after the first treatment. Unlike classic mesotherapy, the client sees the result after the very first session, and it only grows afterwards.
• Comfort. The treatment suits people who are afraid of needles: diamond-sharpened microneedles and their vertical movement reduce discomfort.
• Delicate areas. Thin needles make it possible to work on the areas around the eyes, the wings of the nose, the nasolabial folds, as well as hard-to-reach scar tissue, scars and post-acne.
• Less redness. Redness after the treatment is shorter and less pronounced than after a mesoroller.

Who fractional mesotherapy is for

How a session goes, step by step

1. The skin is cleansed of make-up and treated with an antiseptic.
2. Half of the mesococktail is applied to the area, and the right needle length is chosen.
3. Right after the cocktail is applied, the skin is carefully treated with the device.
4. After the device, the rest of the product is applied.
5. A soothing mask is placed on the face for 20 minutes.

The treatment can be done on dry skin or with special mesotherapy products — the cosmetologist decides according to your goal.

Preparation and the first days after the procedure

On the day of the session, do not apply creams or make-up and do not sunbathe.

Right after, the puncture sites may turn red; this passes within a few hours. People with fragile blood vessels may get small bruises. Pain during the procedure is usually slight or absent.

For the first two days:

• avoid the sun, and afterwards use a cream with SPF;
• do not go to a sauna, steam bath or swimming pool;
• do not use creams, cleansing milk or make-up.

There is no rehabilitation period as such: you can return to your usual routine the same day.

The course and home care after the treatment

A course usually consists of 3–5 treatments 7–10 days apart. A noticeable effect comes after 1–2 sessions and only grows stronger over time. The first changes are usually visible after 1–2 procedures, and then the effect grows as the skin's collagen framework renews. What you can expect after a course:

• age-related changes become less visible, wrinkles less deep;
• the texture evens out, pores look smaller, the skin less oily;
• scars, post-acne marks and stretch marks become less pronounced.
