A period is not in itself a medical contraindication to cosmetic procedures — unlike pregnancy. But during this time pain becomes sharper, blood clotting decreases, the body retains water, and inflamed spots may appear. So you should tell your doctor about your period and move planned procedures away from at least the first 2–3 days.
What to expect from procedures during your period
- More pain. Pain sensations become sharper, so anaesthetic creams do not have enough effect. Injection procedures that used to be quite bearable seem more painful.
- More bruising. Blood clotting decreases, so the risk of bruising during injection procedures is higher, and bruises will take a little longer than usual to fade.
- More swelling. Before menstruation, the body retains water. So biorevitalisation or fillers based on hyaluronic acid (which helps retain moisture) may cause more swelling than usual.
- Inflamed spots. Inflamed spots may appear on the skin, and with them injection and laser procedures and facial cleansing are not recommended.
- Unstable mood. Ordinary things can trigger a strong reaction of the nervous system, you tend to see events in an unduly negative light — and it may seem that the cosmetologist is rougher than usual this time.
What to do if a procedure falls on these days
- Be sure to tell your doctor about it.
- If you plan procedures in advance, try to avoid at least the first 2–3 days of your period.
